My Service at the Hospital Ministry

Jul 16, 2020 | Mass, Social

All ministries at St. Francis of Assisi are important ones. One that is especially rewarding is that of a Hospital Minister. Our team, led by the tutelage of Deacon James Byrne, serves Huntington Hospital every Sunday. We wholeheartedly bring the Blessed Sacrament to patients in the hospital with compassion, love and caring. They look forward to our visits. We sit and pray with them, asking that God’s good graces of healing, hope and well-being be bestowed upon them as they receive the Body of Christ through us.

A most recent rewarding experience for me was my serving a very quiet elderly woman, sitting in the hall finishing her breakfast with a nurse by her side. She had been asking the nurse when the Hospital Minister was going to come, and she was very happy to see me! We prayed the Our Father together and I then served her the Blessed Sacrament. She became quite talkative during our visit.

As I began to say my goodbye, I noticed that the nurse was crying. Asking the nurse if she was okay, she explained to me that it was the most talkative the woman had been since being admitted to the hospital. I actually brought tears of joy to a nurse by my service to a patient as a Hospital Minister. The nurse also asked if she could receive Communion, and I served her the Blessed Sacrament as well. See what I mean about rewarding?

Faithful servant in Christ,
