A Message from Father Peter

August 28th – Twenty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

God’s Surprises

I recently returned from leading a Young Adult Pilgrimage from our “Coffee House Ministry” to Medjugorje – a little town in Bosnia where many believe Our Blessed Mother has appeared very often since 1981. What is not to be questioned is the great number of “conversions”, confessions, vocations to priesthood and religious life that have occurred. Medjugorje has been called the “confessional of the world”! There is a certain appealing blend of the traditional and the contemporary in Medjugorje. Our group was composed of young adults (20’s – 30’s) and they connected well with each other and the place itself! Young people are longing for joyful places and groups where they may express their enthusiastic faith. Those from the group will also enjoy sharing their experiences with others who could not come along on the trip.

Have you noticed the New Clock over the entry in the church? Special thanks to the Terc Family for their contribution at the time of Ruth’s passing. She is still keeping us “on Schedule”!

August 21st – Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time

Finally! Cooler weather has arrived, and while we can still enjoy the beach and barbecues, we can feel the air slowly turning towards September, when a number of our groups and ministries come back after vacation. With students returning to school, we will be having a special Back to School Mass on Friday, September 9 at 7:00pm, to help teachers, students, and their families off to a great start.

Just as students return to school, it’s also time to register your children or grandchildren for Religious Education if you have not already done so. Classes begin September 12, and some grades have a special focus. Children in first grade must register for the first year program as a requirement for moving forward to second grade and preparing for First Holy Communion. 7th grade students must register for the first year of preparation for Confirmation, which takes place in 8th grade. Students in all grades take part in community service, grade level Masses, and special projects throughout the year, all with a focus on deepening their faith, and forming a lifelong relationship with a loving and caring God. A firm foundation in faith is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child. For more information and registration forms, please see our parish website at stfrancisgreenlawn.org, or contact our Religious Education Coordinator Anita Modelewski at 631 754-6436

August 14th – Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time

As we wind down the summer towards what we hope will be cooler weather, do not forget our Parish Booster Club! Remember, this is not a part of an outside fundraiser. It is a tried-and-true parish-based “Good Odds” program, designed to generate funds for our parish and local needs. Fifty dollars gives you membership for the entire fiscal year, from September 5, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Please come aboard as you have in the past.

Remember, you can win again and again throughout the year. You can purchase as many tickets as you wish, and you can even buy tickets as gifts for others. Your participation will ensure a meaningful boost in the parish income during these times of inflation and uncertainty. Thank you in advance for responding!

One More Thing… Don’t forget about Peanut Butter & Jelly Gang for next Sunday! This ministry gathers together via Zoom, to make as many peanut butter & jelly sandwiches as possible to hand out to people in our community experiencing food insecurity. Different groups have participated and all are welcome to help, as they are always trying for a new record! Please consider pitching in to make sandwiches with new friends in this worthy ministry. Meeting is Sunday August 21 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

August 7th – Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

From St. Francis to Medjugorje

Our Medjugorje pilgrims led by Fr. Peter left for their trip in two groups on two separate flights on Friday, July 29. Here is one of the groups with Fr. Peter just before departing. Both groups met up once they arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then made the road journey to Medjugorje, where they will be staying for the week.

The group included a number of young adults from the Starfish Coffee House. Please keep them and Fr. Peter in your prayers while they are on the trip, as you are in theirs as well. They will return with stories, pictures, and videos of their experiences and have promised to share them with the parish!
